What Exactly Are Cataracts?

Cataracts can cause vision loss.  They consist of protein deposits that build up on the lens of an eye.  The resulting accumulation keeps the lens from effectively performing its job, which is focusing light on the retina. As many as 24 million Americans who are least 40 have a cataract problem.  While some experience a cataract in just one eye, having them in both eyes is more typical.  Even with a cataract in each eye, the development of each accumulation might prove different. The most common symptoms our patients experience include:
  • Blurry or hazy vision
  • Refraction changes
  • Increased difficulty seeing in dark areas
  • Reduced color intensity
  • Increased glare sensitivity, particularly at night
Advancing age is not the only risk factor for developing a cataract problem.  Taking certain medications, consuming alcohol, and smoking are also important.  So is exposure to ultraviolet radiation; experiencing deficiencies in nutrition; and suffering from a certain health condition, among them diabetes.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Cataract surgery is the only real way to get rid of cataracts and bring your clear vision back. During the procedure, we remove the cloudy lens inside your eye and replace it with something called an intraocular lens, or IOL. That’s a small, artificial lens that stays in your eye permanently — and the good news is, it’s crystal clear.

There are several types of IOLs available, and we’ll walk you through the options to find the one that fits your lifestyle best. Beyond just clearing up your vision, many IOLs can also correct things like nearsightedness or farsightedness, which means you might not need your glasses or contacts nearly as much after surgery.

Cataract Screenings & Management at Eye Care Center LTD

Cataracts develop gradually, often going unnoticed until they begin to interfere with daily life. Symptoms may include glare, halos, faded colors, or double vision. At Eye Care Center LTD, we perform detailed eye exams to determine cataract severity. If surgery is necessary, we refer you to top local cataract surgeons and provide continuous care before and after your procedure to ensure the best outcome.

Benefits of Cataract Screening

  • Early detection of vision loss from cataracts
  • Clear referral process to trusted local surgeons
  • Ongoing care before and after surgery
  • Improved quality of vision and daily functioning
  • Personalized guidance throughout the process

How We Diagnose Cataracts

During your visit, we look for early signs of cataracts using several tests, including:

  • Eye refraction tests to measure how light enters the eye
  • Eye pressure measurements (to rule out glaucoma as well)
  • Examination of the lens inside each eye for cloudiness
  • Color vision and glare sensitivity testing
  • Visual acuity measurements (how clearly you can see)
  • Retinal evaluation to assess the back of your eyes

Cataract FAQs

What are the first signs of cataracts?
Blurred vision, glare from lights, difficulty seeing at night, or faded colors.
Do you perform cataract surgery in-house?
No, but we partner with expert surgeons and handle all your pre- and post-op care.
Will insurance cover cataract surgery?
Yes, most medical insurance plans---including Medicare---do cover cataract surgery when its medically necessary (e.g., if vision is significantly impaired). Please check with your insurer for specific coverage and copays.
Does Medicare cover cataract surgery?
Medicare may cover cataract surgery that implants conventional intraocular lenses, depending on where you live. Medicare doesn’t usually cover eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers one pair of eyeglasses with standard frames (or one set of contact lenses) after each cataract surgery that implants an intraocular lens.
