What Is Strabismus and How Is It Treated?

Strabismus, commonly referred to as crossed eyes, occurs when the eyes don’t align properly, leading to double vision or depth perception issues. It can affect children and adults and may be treated through therapy, lenses, or surgery.

What Causes Strabismus or Crossed Eyes?

Six muscles surround the eye, and they usually work together to move the eye in the same direction. Strabismus stops these muscles from working together, preventing the eyes from focusing on the same object. This causes confusion and vision problems by sending two images to the brain.

The cause varies on the person and the onset of symptoms, such as whether it affects both eyes, whether it’s constantly or only sometimes present, and the degree of turning. It also depends on how strabismus presents, such as the direction of the turned or misaligned eye. It can turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. Identifying these symptoms helps optometrists understand the condition’s cause and how to treat it.

What are the Symptoms of Cross Eyes (Strabismus)?

Symptoms of Strabismus include:

  1. Eyes that look misaligned.
  2. Eyes that do not move together.
  3. Frequent blinking or squinting, especially in bright sunlight.
  4. Tilting the head to look at things.
  5. Faulty depth perception
  6. Double vision

Cross Eyes Diagnosis

Diagnosing strabismus isn’t about guesswork—it’s about gathering the right information, just like you’d do before investing in a company. A good doctor of optometry knows how to ask the right questions, run the right tests, and put together a clear picture of what’s going on.

Here’s how it works:

  • Patient History: First, your eye doctor will have a conversation with you—or with your child’s parent—about any symptoms you’re seeing. They’ll also take a look at your general health, medications, and anything in your environment that might be playing a role. It’s like reading the footnotes in a financial report—everything matters.
  • Visual Acuity: Next comes the vision check. This is the part where you read letters off a chart, both up close and from a distance. If your results are something like 20/40, that just means you see at 20 feet what most people can see at 40. And if you’re a kid or can’t quite explain what you’re seeing, don’t worry—there are other tools we can use to figure it out.
  • Refraction: Using a tool called a phoropter, your doctor will test different lenses to find out how your eyes bend light. This helps measure any nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Think of it as fine-tuning the lens on a camera—you want the sharpest picture possible.
  • Alignment & Focusing Tests: Here’s where we see how well your eyes work together as a team. Can they track objects, shift focus, and stay aligned when they need to? If your eyes are struggling to cooperate, this testing helps us catch it early.
  • Eye Health Evaluation: Finally, your doctor will examine both the inside and outside of your eyes. They may use drops to keep your eyes from shifting focus during the test. The goal is to rule out other eye diseases and get a full view of what’s really going on behind the scenes.

Once your doctor has all this information—and possibly a few other quick tests—they’ll know whether or not you’re dealing with strabismus. If so, they’ll walk you through your treatment options with a clear, no-nonsense plan that’s built to work.

Strabismus Treatment

When it comes to strabismus—what most folks know as “crossed eyes”—you’ve got options. And like any good investment, the earlier you catch it, the better the long-term results. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution here, but the goal is the same: get the eyes working together and pointing in the same direction. Here’s how you can do that:
  • Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses: In some cases, that’s all it takes. Just like a good value stock that doesn’t need fancy bells and whistles, a straightforward prescription can bring the eyes back into alignment.
  • Prism Lenses: These are a little more specialized. They’re thicker on one side and shift the way light enters your eye. Think of them as a simple fix that reduces the heavy lifting your eyes have to do. Sometimes, they’re enough to correct the issue entirely.
  • Vision Therapy: This is like regular exercise—but for your eyes and brain. A structured program of eye workouts can improve how your eyes move, focus, and work together. It’s not overnight magic, but it’s real training with real results. You might do it in the doctor’s office or at home—just like compound interest, consistency is what matters most.
  • Eye Muscle Surgery: In more involved cases, surgery might be the best course. A skilled surgeon can adjust the eye muscles to help the eyes line up properly. But remember—surgery is often just one part of the solution. You’ll usually still need vision therapy afterward to lock in the results and keep the eyes on track long-term.
So whether it’s lenses, therapy, or surgery, strabismus can usually be managed effectively. Like any smart investment, it takes planning, follow-through, and the right strategy tailored to the person. And with early action, the returns—in clear, comfortable vision—can be excellent.

Customer Beware! This place is a total scam. They lie to you about your insurance to force you into paying a ton out of pocket and at the same time double bill your insurance for the same services that you just paid out of pocket.

Update:

I spoke to the owner. It was a great call. Definitely miscommunication which led to confusion and red flags. Eye Care center is not a scam. I remain a customer of Eye Care Center and look forward to continuing to use them for my eye care needs in the future.

Note: I have updated my rating from one star to four stars based on factors I believe justified my rating change.

The entire appointment was great. The office is located in a mall. Easy to find and plenty of parking. I was seen by the Med-tech as soon as we arrived. He was very kind and professional. As soon as the tech was finished his testing I went to see the DR. DR Albina was wonderful. He totally knew my vision situation and spoke to both my wife and I. It was a refreshing experience because he, in just a few minutes knew exactly what I have be dealing with for almost 40 years. He is going to stay in contact with me even though this was a one time visit set up by Veterans Evaluation Services. I highly recommend DR. Albina!
"My son's crossed eyes were noticeable just slightly around the age of 1. I sought eye care that ultimately led to corrective vision glasses. He's now 20 years old and has great vision!"
