What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, often due to high intraocular pressure. It’s known as “the silent thief of sight” because it progresses without symptoms.
What Causes Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye condition that impairs the optic nerve and can lead to blindness often caused by high pressure in the eye. This pressure can be due to a buildup of fluid in the eye or thinning of the cornea. Glaucoma can also be caused by an injury to the eye or by certain medical conditions. It’s also often hereditary and can develop with age.

The Symptoms of Glaucoma
There are several symptoms that could be signs of glaucoma. They include:
- Visual field loss
- Loss of peripheral vision
- Blurred vision or halos around lights
- Dark spots in the center of your visual field (blind spots)
- Seeing colored dots or flashes in your visual field (phosphenes)
These symptoms are usually not noticed until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. Annual eye exams are critical to identifying glaucoma in its earliest stages, so treatment can be the most beneficial.
Treatment Options for Glaucoma
While there is no cure for glaucoma, there are several treatments available to slow the progression of the disease. The goal of glaucoma treatment is to lower the intraocular pressure in the eyes and prevent damage to the optic nerve. Some of the treatments include:- Eyedrops – Prescription eyedrops are the most commonly used treatment for glaucoma. These drops help reduce pressure by increasing fluid flow out of the eye or decreasing fluid production in the eye.
- Laser Trabeculoplasty – This outpatient procedure can be used to help unblock the drainage angle of the eye. It requires no incision but does require a general anesthetic. The laser is applied through a small slit in the cornea and is used to burn away some of the trabecular meshwork.
- Lifestyle Changes – A healthy lifestyle with continual monitoring will keep glaucoma under control.

Would recommend Dr. Jenna Bacerra to anyone of all ages! Previous eye doctors at corporate chains rushed through my eye exam but Dr. Bacerra described everything with great attention. My time went past 5 because I had so many questions but my dr. and the sweet lady that helped me with my paperwork reassured me it was okay 🙂

Customer Beware! This place is a total scam. They lie to you about your insurance to force you into paying a ton out of pocket and at the same time double bill your insurance for the same services that you just paid out of pocket.

I spoke to the owner. It was a great call. Definitely miscommunication which led to confusion and red flags. Eye Care center is not a scam. I remain a customer of Eye Care Center and look forward to continuing to use them for my eye care needs in the future.

The entire appointment was great. The office is located in a mall. Easy to find and plenty of parking. I was seen by the Med-tech as soon as we arrived. He was very kind and professional. As soon as the tech was finished his testing I went to see the DR. DR Albina was wonderful. He totally knew my vision situation and spoke to both my wife and I. It was a refreshing experience because he, in just a few minutes knew exactly what I have be dealing with for almost 40 years. He is going to stay in contact with me even though this was a one time visit set up by Veterans Evaluation Services. I highly recommend DR. Albina!
