What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to your optic nerve and continues to get worse over time. It occurs due to fluid build-up and pressure in the frontal section of your eye. As the condition worsens, glaucoma can lead to permanent visual impairment as well as complete blindness.
Glaucoma Symptoms
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Intense eye pain
- Eye redness
- Blurred vision
- Visual disruptions
- Observing colored rings around lights
Causes of Glaucoma
The aqueous humor, which is the fluid inside of your eye, normally moves out of your eye by way of a mesh-like channel. Once the channel gets obstructed, there will be a build-up of fluid. Other causes of glaucoma include:
- Serious eye infections
- Chemical or blunt injury to the eye
- Inflammatory conditions
- In rare cases, prior eye surgery
Types of Glaucoma
Angle-Closure Glaucoma
This uncommon type requires urgent medical attention. It is caused by the angle closing between the cornea and the iris, blocking drainage canals and rapidly increasing intraocular pressure. Symptoms appear suddenly and are severe.
Congenital Glaucoma
Develops in babies due to underdeveloped drainage canals. Microsurgery can often correct this in mild cases; surgery and medication are used in more serious cases.
Open-Angle Glaucoma
This is the most common form, accounting for around 90% of cases. It develops gradually as the eye’s drainage canals slowly clog, leading to increased pressure without immediate symptoms.
Glaucoma Treatment
While glaucoma cannot be reversed, regular checkups and treatments can help slow its progression and preserve vision. Treatment options include:
- Prescription eye drops
- Oral medications
- Laser therapy
- Surgical procedures
