What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition where the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This distortion affects how light enters the eye and can cause significant visual impairment. Symptoms may include blurred or distorted vision, increased light sensitivity, frequent prescription changes, and difficulty seeing at night.

Early detection and specialized care are key to preserving vision and improving quality of life.

Expert Keratoconus Management at Eye Care Ltd

At The Eye Care Center Ltd, we specialize in managing keratoconus using advanced diagnostic tools and custom lens technologies to ensure each patient receives personalized care.

Scleral Lenses for Keratoconus

Scleral lenses are a life-changing option for many keratoconus patients. These large-diameter gas permeable lenses vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye), creating a smooth optical surface and a tear-filled reservoir that enhances vision and comfort.

Benefits of Scleral Lenses:

  • Superior visual clarity
  • Custom-designed for irregular corneas
  • Excellent comfort even with severe dry eye
  • Stable fit and long wearing times
  • Ideal for advanced keratoconus or post-surgical eyes (e.g., post-transplant or post-crosslinking)

We offer fitting and ongoing management for scleral lenses, including troubleshooting and refinements for complex cases.

Other Keratoconus Lens Options Offered

    • Custom Soft Lenses for Keratoconus: Designed with thicker centers to mask irregularity while maintaining comfort.
    • Hybrid Lenses: Featuring a rigid gas permeable center with a soft skirt for clarity and comfort.
    • Corneal GP Lenses: Small rigid lenses that provide crisp vision for mild to moderate keratoconus.
    • Piggyback Lens Systems: A soft lens underneath a GP lens to improve comfort and stability.
    • Multifocal Scleral or Hybrid Options: For patients needing simultaneous correction of presbyopia and keratoconus.
Every eye is unique—so our approach to fitting is custom-tailored using corneal topography, OCT, and anterior segment imaging to ensure optimal results.

"My son's crossed eyes were noticeable just slightly around the age of 1. I sought eye care that ultimately led to corrective vision glasses. He's now 20 years old and has great vision!"

Keratoconus FAQs

How do I know if I have keratoconus?
Common signs include increasing astigmatism, worsening vision not corrected by glasses, glare, and frequent prescription changes. A corneal topography scan confirms the diagnosis.
Are scleral lenses covered by insurance?
Many medical insurances cover part or all of the fitting and lens cost when keratoconus is diagnosed, especially if vision cannot be corrected with glasses. We can verify your coverage before your fitting.
Are scleral lenses hard to insert or remove?
They take some practice, but our team will train you on insertion, removal, and cleaning. Most patients become comfortable within the first week.
How long do scleral lenses last?
With proper care, scleral lenses typically last 1–2 years. We recommend regular follow-ups to ensure a healthy fit and monitor corneal stability.
Will keratoconus get worse over time?
Keratoconus tends to progress over several years before stabilizing. We monitor axial length and topography regularly. In younger or rapidly progressing patients, we may refer for corneal crosslinking to help halt progression.
Can I wear scleral lenses all day?
Yes, many patients wear them 10–14 hours a day comfortably. We recommend midday lens removal and refill if needed for optimal comfort.
