Does Your Child Need Myopia Management?

Is your child struggling to see the board at school? Do they squint their eyes while watching TV? Or maybe they complain of headaches after screen time?

All of these are signs of nearsightedness (myopia), a common concern among kids. Nearsightedness, or myopia, is an eye condition where objects nearby are clear but objects far away are blurry. Myopia typically occurs because the eyeball grows too long during childhood. While the exact cause of myopia is still being researched, experts believe several factors contribute to its rise in children, including increased screen time, less time outdoors, and even genetics.

That’s why early detection and intervention are crucial. Myopia management can help slow the progression of nearsightedness and protect your child’s vision for the future.

What is Myopia Management?

What is Myopia Management?

Myopia management, also referred to as myopia control, is the use of specific treatments to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. Myopia management is important because it may help reduce the risk of vision-threatening complications associated with high myopia later in life — including glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, and even blindness.

I had been experiencing eye discomfort for a few weeks and came in to see Dr. Park at Eye Care Center in Addison. After a few tests, Dr. Park determined the underlying problem and provided me a treatment plan. My eyes are feeling great now! Great office and staff!

My son is 8 years old and has autism. I truly appreciate how well the entire staff was able to handle my baby. They made us comfortable, worked with any difficulties there were during his eye exam, to which there was only 1 occurrence with putting eye drops in his eyes, to which they managed to do, and just was overall pleasant. Thank you all there at Eye Care Center for giving us a really nice first visit

I usually don’t take the time to write reviews, but I had such a great experience I wanted to share mine. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the “Eye Care Center” because it looks fairly small from the outside but I was wondering pleasantly surprised to find an office that had top notch technology and a wonderful staff. I felt very well taken care of as a first time client and the doctor took the time to thoroughly explain some things about my eyes and his recommendations. BONUS- staff is bilingual and super friendly. Couldn’t recommend this place enough !

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Myopia Management for Children In Willowbrook, IL

Why Is My Child Myopic?
  • Hereditary - If both parents are nearsighted, there is a greater risk that their kids will be nearsighted too.

  • Near Activities - Children who spend a lot of time performing near activities (reading, using hand-held electronics, etc) have a greater risk of becoming nearsighted. Research shows spending more time outside lowers the risk of childhood myopia.
Why are more children being diagnosed with myopia?
More people are becoming myopic. In the early 1970s, only 25% of Americans were nearsighted. Today, the prevalence of myopia has increased to over 42%. And in some Asian countries, up to 80% of the population is myopic.
Why is Myopia in Children a Concern?
  • Cataracts - While cataracts are typically associated with aging, they tend to develop earlier in individuals with nearsightedness (myopia).

  • Glaucoma - Nearsighted people have a two to three times greater risk of developing glaucoma.

  • Detached Retina - Nearsightedness increases the risk of retinal detachment–in addition, the higher the myopia, the greater the risk.

Can You Slow the Progression of Myopia in Kids?
YES! Most people can slow down or stop their eyes from becoming more myopic (nearsighted). Stronger glasses each year should not be normal. There is no cure, but you can most likely improve how your eyes are changing. Currently, our office focuses on 3 myopia control treatments: atropine eye drops, multifocal contact lenses, and corneal molding.
What Myopia Treatment Options Are Available for My Child?

At Eye Care Center Ltd, we take a very personal approach to each case. We will customize our treatments to your child’s situation to ensure the experience is successful. Every family is unique and every child needs a plan that will not only slow their myopia but open them up to a new world of possibilities for their vision. We will be there for you every step of the way to answer all your questions and to make sure your child has a great experience.

  • Atropine Eye Drops - The effect atropine has on accommodation may be what accounts for its effectiveness in also reducing the progression of myopia in children. Some studies have shown that atropine is the most effective way of controlling myopia and that its use can reduce myopia progression by up to 77 percent.

  • Multi-Focal Contact Lenses for Myopia Management – Multi-focal contact lenses are designed to provide clear vision at all distances, making them an excellent option for children with myopia. These lenses work by helping to focus light on different areas of the retina, reducing the strain on the eyes. A recent study revealed that children who wore multi-focal contact lenses daily had a 50% reduction in the progression of myopia, proving to be an effective tool in slowing down the worsening of nearsightedness.

  • Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) for Myopia Control in Children – Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, is a non-surgical treatment option for children with myopia. This treatment involves wearing special contact lenses overnight that reshape the cornea, allowing your child to experience clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contacts. One of the most compelling reasons parents choose Ortho-K for their children is its ability to slow the progression of myopia. As a non-invasive treatment, Ortho-K provides both convenience and effectiveness in managing myopia in children.
