What We Check for During a Pediatric Eye Exam

Refractive Errors

Blurry vision from conditions like nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness, and astigmatism can affect how your child learns and plays. Kids may sit too close to the TV or struggle with reading—but not always say something. A quick, comfortable exam can reveal what’s going on and lead to simple solutions like glasses or specialty lenses.

Strabismus (Crossed Eyes)

Strabismus affects about 4% of children. It occurs when the eyes don’t align properly, which can lead to depth perception problems and visual discomfort. Treatment can be as simple as glasses or vision therapy, and in some cases, may involve minor surgery. Catching it early improves outcomes dramatically.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

This common issue occurs when one eye is much stronger than the other. The brain begins to favor the strong eye, leaving the weaker one underdeveloped. If detected early, treatments like patching or eyedrops can strengthen the “lazy” eye and restore balanced vision.

Nystagmus

• First eye exam: between 6–12 months of age
• Second exam: around age 3
• Annual exams: starting before kindergarten and continuing every year
